Apparently today is the 1 year anniversary of my blog! Well I never. What shall I do to mark this occasion? A party, a cake, a glass or two of wine? No, none of this would be appropriate, something altogether more creative is needed but what? Please post your ideas below!
I have been sat on this for some time (so to speak!)
I was nominated for this by Rainbowjunkiecorner

And here’s my Baker’s Dozen:
I was just getting over the excitement of receiving a nomination for the Wonderful Team Member Readership Award when another one appeared magically on my blog! Thank you Lucie at LOVELUCIE1 for the nomination! I am truly honoured!
I had seen the badge for this award on other people’s blogs but did not know what it was about so here you go…
As Lucie says ‘it is an award passed between bloggers, sharing the appreciation of the time and care of the developing bloggee.’ It is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers.
‘Liebster’ is German and means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome.
Here are the rules for receiving this award:
1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves
2. Answer the questions that the tagger set for you plus create 11 questions for the people you’ve tagged to answer.
3. Choose 11 people and link them in your post.
4. Go to their page and tell them.
(Thanks to Lucie I have been able to cut and paste much of this information to pass on to you!)
So, are you ready for it? I will answer these questions as honestly and succinctly as I can (since I am prone to rabbit on somewhat you may be pleased to hear this but also doubtful that I can do it! Here goes!)
1) Is your work/life/family/craft balance as you would wish it?
Three years ago I was a primary school teacher when I was diagnosed with Lupus. After struggling for many months I had to give up my job and spent quite some time adjusting to life with Lupus which has been a long and difficult road. However, here I am three years later with the time to do what I like best. I manage to spend one afternoon a week doing a voluntary job , as much crafting as possible and apart from that fit in my daily tasks around how I feel which includes exercising on my bike and working in the garden . With my boys grown up and usually not at home this means I can concentrate on myself and my lovely husband. I have even procured a social life in the last 18 months so time for friends and family!
So the answer to the question is not simple: I do not like having Lupus or how it has meant I have had to change my life since I had loved my job, however, I actually have time to live which I previously didn’t! So maybe a blessing in disguise!
I don’t think that really answers the question but that’s my answer!
2) What else are you passionate about that you don’t normally blog about?
My two sons!
Sewing/dressmaking- I have made many items over the years including bridesmaids dresses, shepherds costumes, tailored jackets, bags, trousers, shirts, wall hangings, curtains and theatrical backdrops! As I write I can look up at a wall hanging I made about twenty years ago…
…sitting above my kitchen table. It is not the most beautiful or accomplished piece but represents a happy time when I was a new mum and living in a community full of creative people.
I love reading but have not as yet posted about any good reads. I will tell you now that I have recently discovered John Irving and want to read ALL his works- I tend to do this if I find an author I like.
I love ballet- as a girl I wanted to be a dancer and even got as far as doing this as part of my degree. My dance hero is Rudolf Nureyev after who my rabbit is named (I think i mentioned this in an early post!)
My garden- I have posted about this but just wanted to say it again as growing things brings me alot of joy and contentment. We have created a sanctuary in our back garden and the front has become a productive vegetable plot!
Charity shops and vintage/retro – I love a bargain and as I am very keen to recycle, upcycle and reuse then it follows that I like to root around charity shops. My love of vintage and retro I think is reflected in some of the things I like to create,
Oh I’d better make this a bit more brief or I am in danger of writing a book so here’s a list instead-
friendship, honesty, cooking for friends and family, trees, mountains, lakes and the sea, quirky and colourful, happy and optimistic , fresh air, coolness, compassion and caring.
3) Do your friends read your blog or do you keep your personal friends separate from your blogging friends?
Friends do read my blog but tend not to comment online but will mention they have read a post whereas I have made new ‘blogging’ friends who tend to be the ones who comment online! I love the online community and how we can reach out across the world and meet others with the same interests or experiences.
4) Why did you start your blog?
This relates back to the having to finish work and my crafting started as part of my recovery process: re-finding something within myself and revisiting skills I had all but left behind due to the time I spent at work. No time to be me. So as my crafting gathered momentum I felt that a blog was a good way of getting out there and connecting with like minded people everywhere. I didn’t realise at the outset how enjoyable it would be or the wonderful crafters out there who would become online friends!
The other reason is that I see it as a way to spread the word about Lupus and hopefully do my bit in ensuring people are better informed about this dreadful autoimmune condition that dominates the life of sufferers.
5) If you had to choose one craft and discard all others, which one would it be?
Can I refuse to answer this question? Well if pushed I would say crochet but I would prefer to say ‘needlecrafts’ so I can do them all! Any thing that involves stitching!
6) Do you buy books, magazines and patterns with regards to your craft or are you inspired just by what you come across on the net?
I tend not to buy magazines unless from discounted sources or charity shops/car boot sales. This is also the main source of hard copy patterns. Other than that I gather ideas and patterns online or through my crafty friends. And call me old fashioned but I regularly use the library!
7) Have you started thinking about projects specifically for Christmas yet?
Sorry to say that the answer is yes! Got to give yourself time! Working on ideas for presents for friends and family and for items to sell. Just booked a place at a craft fair today for October! Winter warmers and Christmassy doodahs should go down well there!
8) How many works in progress do you have on the go at the moment?
Who knows! Let’s see…
- granny blanket
- art blanket in the style of Hundertwasser
- Christmas decorations
- slipper socks
I think that’s it at the moment!
9) What do the closest to you think about your craft?
My sons laugh and tell me I am as mad as a spoon (response to the less serious items) but then request I make them things for themselves or for presents for their friends. One recent make was the Patrick Starfish keyring for Tom as he has his first car.
My dearest friends are very encouraging (tho’ I am sure they also think some of my more quirky ideas are on the mad side) but show genuine delight when I do something more serious and skilled such as the Penarth Shawl…
My husband has learnt to smile and make encouraging noises but I think a true measure is the fact that whilst I sit there creating in an evening he also sits there knitting football hats! Ha ha!
10) Has your craft been taught to you by a family member or are you self taught?
I do not ever remember being taught and when I ask my mum she tells me I just picked my skills up by copying or teaching myself. Back in the 1960s and 70s this was through books as we did not have the internet! I do remember a friend’s gran teaching me how to hand smock though. And at high school I must have picked up one or two skills in ‘Domestic Science’ lessons! Although my lasting memory of this time is running a little business selling crochet hats and making loon pants for friends!
11) What is the best and worst things about blogging for you?
The time it takes to write a blog and get it reading and looking okay, also my own self doubt about whether anyone will find it interesting! But I have decided that people will make their own minds up!
Interaction! The best bit is making contact with other like minded people all over the world who you can share your ideas with and develop new friendships. There is alot of love out there and it really warms the cockles of my heart to feel it!
Next I am supposed to nominate 11 more people! OK, it may be that some of these are the same as the previous award, but I am not going to look back or check if they already have the award, sorry, and they will appear in list form. Click each name to link to their blogs!
Oh and Happy reading!
- Irving’s Words
- Squirrel PIcnic
- Nice Piece of Work
- Rainbow Junkie Corner
- Did you make that
- Green Dragon fly
Next I need to pose 11 questions (who came up with eleven?!) to my nominees! Here goes…
- Do you have a crafting/literary hero? If so who and why?
- Do you have a workshop or preferred place to work?
- What are your sources of inspiration for your work?
- How much time do you spend on your work?
- What is your favourite material/medium and why?
- Do you prefer to work alone or with others?
- Do you follow patterns or create as you go?
- What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?
- Describe your ethics in five words
- What is the most unusual thing you have created/written?
- Have you had any disasters?!
That’s it! I have done it!
Just off to let my nominees know and back to one of my WIPs…mmmm, which one shall I do today? Feels like a sock day! See you soon,
Couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I saw another nomination for another award! It’s the Liebster Award. Eyes right to see the badge of honour! When I have eventually untangle the thing that is the Wonderful Team Member Readership Award I will return to tell you about the Liebster! In the meantime I am going to sit with a big grin on my face …
Morning all! It’s me again.
I have pondered over my next nominations because I am a modest little blog with only a wee but growing number of followers (I am NOT seeking sympathy) and I will not compromise integrity by telling you about blogs just to make up the numbers, My understanding is that this award is about interaction so should be based on evidence of that. This means that I probably won’t make it to 14 as the award requires unless I stretch the seven day time slot a little!
So, next on my very exclusive list is… drum roll… applause… TA DAA!
whose tagline is
unexpected, subversive … fun
which frankly, says it all! She has a unique and creative style which uses crochet in a very individual and organic way and is a way of working I am beginning to develop myself . You really must go and see her work by clicking this example if you haven’t already done so!
Next and last for today is AVIENA, whose blog is ‘ a place to share where my hands and mind wander ‘. I really love this qualifier on her blog and when you read her posts you get a real sense of what a reflective person she is.
I first saw her work through the MONTHLY MADE IT CHALLENGE run by Woolhogs ( go and see if you don’t already know about that- I insist!) and I believe that’s where she saw me! Her work really does come from the heart ❤ and her post ‘What to give ??’ explains this beautifully.
Well, that’s it for today but not the last about this award as I have a couple of more gems I need to pass on and thoughts to share before the seven days is over!
I am back with my next set of nominations to signpost you to some more lovely bloggers and their blogs who take their time to interact with others.
The first one today is MAP OF TIME: A TRIP INTO THE PAST who has a head for history and whose blog is so educational and full of the most exquisite photographs. Such as this which will lead you to an interesting post about an amazing horse.
Next I would like to mention LOLLYKNITS who has been a little quiet lately for reasons of her own but who has a quality blog and a bucket load of skill and you might like to see what she has been upto on the spinning front! Here is a scrummy bit of fleece to take you over!
Numero tres, is CROCHETHOME who creates the most beautiful and intricate crochet designs with an excellent eye for colour as you can see from her recent baby blanket post. I am in awe of her quality photography.
And finally for today you really must pop over to say hello to Carly at WELCOME TO MY BLOG who likes to travel but still finds time to enter the blog world too! I loved her Copenhagan Crafting Adventure because I had recently been to Stockholm and had a bit of a Nordic thing going on! Take a look!
Well that’s four more done! Have fun looking if you don’t already know these blogs. Back again in due course with some more blogs to tell you about.
Imagine my surprise when I read this message from Rainbow Junkie
‘Hi! I have nominated you for the ‘Wonderful Team Member Readership Award’I hope you feel able to accept this award but anyway please regard it as an appreciation of your blog and your interaction with other blogs.
You can view your nomination here:http://rainbowjunkiecorner.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/wonderful-team-member-readership-award-2/.’
I was delighted of course then wondered what it entailed?

Okay,so here goes- logo displayed? Mmmm, how do I do that? Hang on, I need to look at the dashboard… DONE!
Fourteen readers/bloggers to tell you about and nominate? Ah well the first few are easy to identify…
In no particular order…
Jill at NICE PIECE OF WORK always has an encouraging word and shares her wicked sense of humour. I so so wish that she lived closer and not on the other side of the world! As well as being an all round brilliant human being she is of course a talented crafter and blogger! Go over and visit her NOW!!!
Next I suggest you stay in that part of the world and pop into WOOLHOGS (in South Africa) where the fabulous Maryanne runs the monthly Made it Challenge which is a brilliant forum for crafters to share and admire work from all over the world (and vote on their favourites!)
Number three is LoveLucie who uses photographs beautifully to share her loves and interests and like me just can’t manage to be without something creative in her fiddly little fingers. It was Lucie who helped me sort out how to get the pinterest button onto to my blog! Thanks Lucie! Go and see her fab gecko, it’s exquisite!
And now for something completely different- Lupus. the Adventure between the lines. Some of you may have noticed that I do an occasional post about Lupus and this is how we have come to know about each other. For me it is so interesting to hear about how other people with Lupus manage their illness and get on with their lives.
That will do for now. I am off to let these lovely people know that I am nominating them and come back to see you again soon with my next set of lovely bloggers!
